As theConfederates passed through the town, the people ofWinchester, frantic with triumph after their two months ofcaptivity, rushed out from every doorway to meet thetroops; and with weeping and with laughter, with the Banks aide-de-camp, Colonel Strother, says, For several minutes itlooked like the commencement of a Bull Bun panic. PURSUIT 841 blessings of women and the fierce shouts of men, the soldiersof the Valley were urged forward in hot pursuit. As they emerged from the town, and looked down uponthe open pastures through which the Martinsburg turnpike10 A M runs, they saw the country before them coveredwith crowds of fugitives. Jackson, still in advance,turned round to seek his cavalry. From the head of everystreet eager columns of infantry were pouring, and, de-ploying without waiting orders, were pushing hastily acrossthe fields. But not a squadron was in sight. Ashby,with the handful of men that still remained with him, hadridden to Berryville, expecting that the enemy wouldattempt to escape by Snickers Gap. Steuart, with thetwo regiments that had done such service at FrontKoyal, was with Ewell and Trimble; but although Don-nellys regiments could be seen retiring in good order,they were not followed by a single sabre. Despatching an aide-de-camp to order Steuart to thefront, Jackson called up his batter
