Description
English: Reverse of a Russian stampless folded letter to Bordeaux France, marked 'St. PETERSBURG 6 MAY. 1838.' straight line cancel. Black 'P.PAYE', French 'PRUSSE PAR GIVET' and oval 'AED' handstamps, reverse receiver 'BORDEAUX 3 JUIN 1838 (32)'.

Details:

  • May 6, 1838 (Julian) paid letter posted at St. Petersburg. Sender wrote 'One versingelte Einlage' at top meaning without separate enclosure, or a single letter. Monetary notations on reverse: '109½' paid at 109½ kopecks. The post office marked the letter by black hand stamp 'P.Paye' (paid). The postmark 'St. PETERSBURG MAY 6 1838' was applied.
Dobin: 01.01 type 1.07. Reception expedition of foreign correspondence, used 1831-1840, Rarity 3.[1]
  • Letter entered France at Givet marked there with the entry mark showing mail from (or through) Prussia: 'PRUSSE PAR GIVET'.
Van der Linden: 2347[2]

Exchange office in France also marked 'A.E.D.' affranchie a l'etranger jusqu'a destination (postpaid from abroad to destination).

  • June 3, 'BORDEAUX 3 JUIN 1838 (32)' receiver backstamp.
