X PREFACE. The writers purpose, as the title indicates, isto give a Monograph on Athens ; but Athens,in connection with its one scriptural episode andassociation,—the memorable visit of the GreatApostle of the Gentiles, and his Discourse on itsAreopagus. In the fulfilment of a long-cherishedpurpose—though in many respects differing inplan and treatment, it is designed to form a com-panion to what was published many years ago,after a personal sojourn in the City of the Csesars— St. Paul in Eome. The theme of the present Volume is twofold.* Athens and St. Paul would probably be aname more strictly accurate as regards the orderof sequence:—the account of the Great Citytaking precedence of the Great Discourse: butthe other title is retained, as more in harmonywith that of the preceding Work just referred to.It will, moreover, be seen that the local descriptionsand the Apostolic visit to which these are thesettings, are not treated separately, but are largelyinterblended.
