Text Appearing Before Image: planted it on the sandbags of the bastion, thus winningfor himself a place among the countrys heroes. The Britishfailed in another attack on Charleston in 1779, but weresuccessful the next year after a four-months siege. A railroad, one hundred and thirty-six miles in length,which was completed in 1833 from Charleston to Hamburgon the Savannah Iliver opposite Augusta, Georgia, was atthat time the longest in the world. Regular passengerservice was begun on the first half dozen miles out ofCharleston on January15, 1831. Not longafterward the negrofireman on the locomo-tive fastened the safetyvalve shut because hedid not like the noiseof the escaping steam.As a result, the boilerexploded, scalding theengineer severely andinjuring the fireman sothat he died two dayslater. After that thelocomotive was re-garded with suspicion,and for a long time abarrier car piledhigh with cotton baleswas interposed betweenthe engine and the train to protect the passengers.
