Summary[edit]
DescriptionSt. Martin's Church - east window - geograph.org.uk - 1582459.jpg |
English: St. Martin's Church - east window. See 1582099 and 1582235. The east window, the outstanding feature of the church, is in memory of Charles Howard, the father of George, and the chairman of the building committee. There are three rows of figures. The upper part has in it the figure of Christ as the Good Shepherd, surrounded by floating angels carrying scrolls inscribed with verses from the 23rd Psalm. The centre panel of the bottom row is filled with a 'Pelican in her piety', ie the bird tearing her breast to feed her young. To its right is St. Dorothy, clad in purple and blue, and then St. George in red and golden armour. All the designs were original, but some were subsequently repeated many times. The St. George was used over 40 times, mainly in memorial windows after the first World War. The Pelican seems to be unique. {Source: Leaflet "Brampton Church Stained Glass"}. See also 1529108. |
