Deutsch: St. Ansgar ist vor hellblauem Hintergrund, der Farbe des Himmels gemalt. Das Modell erinnert an die erste Kirche, die Ansgar im Gebiet der Hammaburg bauen ließ. Die Röntgenaufnahmen, die im Rahmen der Untersuchungen gemacht wurden, machten alte Texte unter der „neuen Farbe“ wieder lesbar. So konnte rekonstruiert werden, dass der schwarz-goldene Rand des Bildes ursprünglich rot war und einen umlaufenden Text trägt, der besagte (vom Latein ins Deutsche): „Im Jahre des Herrn 1457 am Vorabend der Geburt Christi starb der ehrwürdige Herr Magister Johan Middelman, Probst dieser Kirche, seine Seele möge in Frieden ruhen. Amen.“ Das Tafelbild diente also auch als Epitaph für den Verstorbenen. Dieser hatte in seinem Spruchband ebenfalls eine Nachricht niedergeschrieben: „ora pro me beate pater Anscharius“ (bete für mich, Seliger Vater Ansgar). |

Deutsch: Der Kniende Stifter trägt über seinem Kopf ein Spruchband: „Johan Middelman prebo(situs) ob(iit) 1457“. Die golden eingefasste schwarze Umrandung trägt auf ihrem unteren Rahmenschenkel die Inschrift: „S. Anscharivs Renov: 1668“. Das Stiftungsdatum und das der nachreformatorischen Umgestaltung sind also auf dem Gemälde selbst festgehalten. |
