Каждый силуэт представляет традиционный класс (слева направо): бесчелюстные (Agnatha), хрящевые рыбы (Chondrichthyes), костные рыбы (Osteichthyes), земноводные (Amphibia), пресмыкающиеся (Reptilia), птицы (Aves) и млекопитающие (Mammalia). Два вымерших класса — плакодермы (Placodermi) и акантоды (Acanthodii). Бентон отметил про своё собственное дерево, что «число семейств — несовершенная мера разнообразия». В частности, рептилии, вероятно, должны были быть более разнообразными в мезозое. |
