Description
English: 428-GX-USN-1160767: Hyattsville, Maryland. Retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, Spann Watson swears in Aviation Officer Candidate Jill Brown. Twenty-four year-old Miss Brown is the first black woman to qualify for training as a military pilot. Watson is an Air Traffic Specialist with the Federal Aviation Administration and uses his extracurricular energy to encourage more African-Americans to enter the field of Aviation. Photographed by PHC James E. Markham, received January 1975. U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives. (2016/04/19).
