Description

Soviet commissar, most likely to be Aleksei Gordeyevich Yeryomenko, political officer of the 220th Rifle Regiment, 4th Rifle Division, killed in action in 1942 leading his soldiers to the assault in Ukraine, Voroshilovgrad region. The political commissar or officer was the supervisory political officer responsible for the political education and ideology in a USSR unit. Although it first appeared in the French Revolution was a widely-used rank in the Soviet Union, because the high commands saw necessary the maintenance of ideological discipline in the trenches. However, other formations used this rank besides the Red Army. For example, from December 1943 until the defeat of Nazi Germany, the German armed forces created a network of political instructors to maintain National Socialist indoctrination inside the Wehrmacht. The Führungsoffizier oversaw installing ideological conviction and reinforce combat morale through training lessons and teaching. Nevertheless, they had no direct influence on combat decisions as had the political commissar in the Soviet Army.
