Summary[edit]
DescriptionSouth Holston Lake, (Virginia-Tennessee border, USA).jpg |
English: This is an oblique aerial view of the northern part of South Holston Lake on the Virginia-Tennessee border in eastern America. The state boundary runs near the bottom of the picture.
South Holston Lake is not natural - it is an artificial reservoir that formed when the South Fork of the Holston River was dammed in the 1940s. The forested ridges and ~flat-floored valleys seen here are part of the Valley and Ridge Physiographic Province, one of three provinces that make up eastern America's Appalachian Mountains. The Valley and Ridge consists of folded sedimentary rocks of Paleozoic age. Structural deformation principally occurred during the Allegheny Orogeny. This ancient mountain-building event was a consequence of tectonic collision between Africa and North America. It was a key event in the formation of the ancient supercontinent of Pangaea.
