South Australian Railways locomotive no 504, Tom Barr Smith -- new Overland livery, smooth casing and valance, ca 1937

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Publicity photograph of South Australian Railways locomotive no 504, Tom Barr Smith, showing a livery matching the newly introduced livery on passenger cars of the "Overland" (Adelaide–Melbourne Express) in South Australia's centenary year, 1936. The locomotive may have been photographed in early 1937.

The most noticeable changes on the locomotive were a smooth casing that concealed all piping and fittings on the boiler, and a new valance along the running boards and down to the pilot beam that was painted green to match the cars, with lining above and below in silver. The smoke-box front was painted silver and the headlight was lowered to the centreline of the boiler.

The design undoubtedly originated in the Southern Pacific Railroad's new "Daylight" trains operating between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The resemblance was complete even to the design of the name 'Overland' at the front of the valance – in silver beneath a stylised winged wheel – where the Southern Pacific's orange and red counterparts carried their name.
