Summary[edit]

Description
English: Title: Smoke house for smoking Buffalo meat.

Creator: Robertson, George (photographer)
Contributors: Oliphant, W. J. (publisher)
Date: 1874
Series: Life on the Frontier
Description: In 1874 W. J. Oliphant published a series of stereoscopic views of a Texas buffalo hunt. The photographs were taken in and around Taylor County, near present-day Abilene and Buffalo Gap, by an Oliphant friend and part-time employee, George Robertson. In addition to skinning and collecting buffalo hides for sale, the hunters also used buffalo meat for food. The meat was salted and put into a pit lined with buffalo hides. After about a week, the meat was removed and placed on wooden racks inside a home-made smoke house. The meat was smoked slowly for a couple of weeks until a good crust had formed over the meat inside, thus making it easier for the hunters to store and transport it in their wagons. This view shows a hunter standing beside one of the smokehouses built during this hunt. Source: Lawrence T. Jones III.
Physical Description: 1 photographic print on stereo card: stereograph, albumen; 11.3 x 18 cm.
