Description: In 1874 W. J. Oliphant published a series of stereoscopic views of a Texas buffalo hunt. The photographs were taken in and around Taylor County, near present-day Abilene and Buffalo Gap, by an Oliphant friend and part-time employee, George Robertson. In this view, two hunters skin a freshly killed buffalo. Note that they have kept their large-caliber Sharps carbines close at hand as they work. This hunt was made during the winter when the southern plains Indians seldom raided. At this time, however, the Comanches and Kiowas were still off the reservation and a raiding party could show anywhere at anytime. The Indians especially hated the white buffalo hunters, so hunters usually were alert and kept firearms close by in case of attack. These two hunters propped their rifles right on the buffalo carcass and within arm’s reach. Source: Lawrence T. Jones III.
