esix hundred and seventy, who have a hold on theassembly, who compel the attention of the House.Such a position is to be reached only by ability andforce of character, by force of character especially, for in political life it is temperament more than intellectthat tells. Instances of men who have reached to thisprominence so rapidly as Dr. Macnamara are rare. His success is due entirely to his own merits. Theson of an Tiish soldier, born at Montreal, though rearedand educated in England, he had his own way tomake in private life. He made it with quick strides. At the age of fifteen he was a school teacher, at thirty-one he was editor of the Schoolmaster, and at thirty-fivePresident of the National Union of Teachers. In publiclife his individual gift of brisk and invigorating speech— a style entirely his own—was bound to carry himfar. Spontaneity, directness, humour, sincerity, areits qualities. Behind the spccili there are clear think-ing, strong convictions, undaunted courage. »3
