Conservatives andLiberals, united in a common sorrow, crowding to payunanimous homage to that great servant of the Nation. The lying-in-state was plain and simple in theextreme, and yet had a dignity and solemnity thatmade it most impressive. The building was undraped.No trappings of woe hung from its grey and ruggedwalls. In the centre of the hall stood a lofty catafalque.At the four corners were lighted candles in massivesilver candlesticks. Behind it stood a beautiful brasscross embossed with precious stones. A white silk pall,with gold and blue embroideries, hung at the foot of thebier, displaying the inscription, ^ Requicscai in pace.^ The bier was .surmounted by a plain polished oakcasket with brass mountings.
