MR. RICHARD BELL. The General Secretary of the Amalgamated Societyof Railway Servants—perhaps the largest trade unionorganisation in the kingdom — is one of the bestrespected of the Labour representatives in the Houseof Commons. Mr. Bell had been employed in Welsh iron-worksfor four years before he commenced his railway careerat the age of seventeen. He entered the service ofthe Great Western Railway Company as a porter atMerthyr-Tydvil station. Ten years later he becameprominent as a Labour advocate at Swansea. Hewas transfeiTed to Cambrae, a remote place in Corn-wall, but he soon resigned his position on the railwa)-,and, returning to Swansea, resumed his post of organiserfor the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants. In1898 he was appointed General Secretary of the society.At the General Election of 1900 he was retmned tothe House of Commons as one of the Members forDerby. In the House of Commons Mr. Bell interests himselfchiefly in matters affecting the welfare of railwayser
