that this gentle-looking andfragile little man, with the long, venerable beard, andthe black skull-cap hiding his baldness, had really beenengaged in desperate enterprises, and, condemned todie, had cheated the gallows. Yet so it was, for inthe days of his hot youth he was convicted of hightreason, by bearing arms against the Crown in theFenian Insui-rection of 1867. Mr. OBrien was in command of the Fenians ofCoik. They captured a country police station—orbarracks, as the quarters of the Royal Irish Con-stabulary arc called—which was occupied by a headconstable and six men. The insurrection was quickly suppressed. Mr.OBrien was soon arrested. It came out in evidenceat hi-s trial that during the attack on the police bai-rackshe had shown great humanity and courage in rescuingfrom the burning building, before theijolice surrendered,the wife and children of the head constable. Thesentence of death was, on the representation of thejudge who had pronounced it, immediately commuted. 78

THE GRANDCOMMITTEE ROOM. Immediately off Westminster Hall, the scene of many aState trial and political impeachment, is the GrandCommittee Eoom. Here it was that on the 16thFebruary, 1897, the Select Committee of the House ofCommons opened the historic inquiry into the originand circumstances of the famous Jameson Raid onthe Transvaal, in December, 1895, and also into theadministration of the British South Africa Company. It was really a great State trial. Mr. Cecil Ehodes,lately the Prime Minister of Cape Colony, was practicallybeing impeached. The mind inevitably recalled asimilar trial, just a century back, in Westminster Hall,when Warren Hastings was impeached of high crimesand misdemeanours, as Governor-General of India.That scene will live for ever, as painted in glowingcolours by the splendidly descriptive pen of JIacaulay.Neither military nor civil pomp was wanting, saysthe historian.
