- imtil it wastotally destroyed by the fire of 1834. On the buildingof the new Palace, the Chapel Chamber was reconstructedas a noble hall. The place in the Lobby, just at thedoor of the old Legislative Chamber, where SpencerPerceval, the Prime Minister, was shot dead in ISlJby mad Bellingham, a Liverpool broker, is marked bya brass plate. The positions of the Speakers chairand the table are similarlj- indicated. Its splendid roof is most imposing. Grace anddelicacy distinguish its painted windows, its stone andwood carvings. But its most conspicuous and interestingfeatures are the memorials of great Iarliamentarypersonages of the past. It fittingly contains statues oftwelve of tlie greatest and wisest statesmen of formerdays, whose voices, raised in behalf of patriotism andj^ublic virtue, so often rang through the old Chamberof the House of Commons.
Text Appearing After Image:
MR. JOHN WANAMAKER. The Houses ot Parliament have naturally a greatattraction for Americans. Dui-ing the Session hundredsof them come to see the Chambers at work, to walkthrough the Members quarters, to have a cup of teaon the Terrace. The ^4sits of the Hon. John Wanamaker,of Philadelphia, will bo long remembei-ed by thosewho have met him. He is one of those strong andvirile personalities of which the United States seem tobe so prolific. Those who run may read the chai-acteristics of Mr.Wanamaker in his interesting face. They are unmis-takable. Here, surely, are faith in self, indomitablewill, self-control that is absolute and unshakable, andwith them the kindliness, the charity, the surrender, which religious fervour imparts. At the age of fomteen he was an errand boy. Heis now one of the richest men in the world. Thelargest business in America, that of Wanamaker andBrown, retail clothing salesmen—with its headquartersin Philadelphia, and branch stores throughout theStates—owes it
