At the age of fomteen he was an errand boy. Heis now one of the richest men in the world. Thelargest business in America, that of Wanamaker andBrown, retail clothing salesmen—with its headquartersin Philadelphia, and branch stores throughout theStates—owes its extent and prosperity to his industry,enterprise, and powers of organisation. He is also anactive politician, and from 1881 to 1893 was Postmaster-General of the United States. But Mr. Wanamaker does not confine his energiesto the fields of business and politics. He is one ofthe great lay religious forces of the United States.He founded the largest religious organisation in thecomitry, the Bethany Sunday School movement of thePresbyterian Church, and still superintends it.
