Summary[edit]

Description Faulty Sakno silicone foam firestop installation in a Calgary wastewater treatment plant in the 1980's. This is a hole in a fire-resistance rated concrete wall, above a fire door frame. The outside temperature was ca. -40°C (-40 F). The inside was heated. A steady temperature is needed for the foam to "snap", solidify and expand properly, as it evolves hydrogen gas. Every now and then someone opened the outside door, the temperature would plummet and the foam's consistency was affected, as can be seen by the tears and uneven bubble distribution and incomplete phase change. To achieve its rating, as per its certification listing, the foam also requires ceramic fibre boards (furnace insulation) to permanently cover both sides of the foam, a common deficiency, exposed by whistleblower Gerald W. Brown. This is image 1 of 2. The other one is right here: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Silicone_foam_sakno2.jpg .
