Description
English: View of Le Barque, France, during World War I. A house which has collapsed over a farm cart. A child's pram on the top of the ruins strikes a poignant note, but it seems surprisingly intact and might have been placed by the photographer to give that effect. This may be one of a series of photographs of the devastation caused by the Germans as they retreated in the spring of 1917 in the Ancre area.

In the spring of 1917 the Allies made considerable advance in the area between the rivers Ancre and Somme. However, they failed to really consolidate this gain, a failure which Field Marshal Haig appeared to justify by emphasising the difficulties of transport and supply caused by the German policy of destruction as they retreated.
