pt things pretty lively for a while. The tabledecorations were both unique and artistic, but theivory chopsticks interested me most of all. It wasa real oriental feast, and I regret that I can not recallthe menu in full, from the sharks fins to the almond-cream ! I shall never forget this dessert. In con-sistency, color, and odor it was a replica of almondlotion for rough hands and chapped lips. I wantedto take mine home for future use. There were aboutten courses, the like of which I had never seen l)efore.The dinner began with birds-nest soup, and thenthere were all sorts of chop-sueys. There weresquids and bamboo sprouts, and tender gourds andfishes enclosed in pasty noodles, and seaweed, andherbs, and roots, and dried abalone, and dozens ofother things. But those chopsticks! I admired themto myself and then to my partner, who admonishedme, explaining that Chinese hospitality would compelour host to present me with a pair, and that they (51) S F. \ F. (52) SEVEN WEEKS IN HAWAII were quite expensive. I really ate with them everycourse that was served, even the rice, with suchmarked success that at the end of the meal Mr.Chung Loy arose and proposed a toast to MissC—, the lady who like chopstick better than fork.They all clapped their hands and I was presentedwith a piece of Chinese tapestry. Then a prominentJapanese escorted us through Chinatown to a Japan-ese teahouse, where, after leaving our shoes at theentrance, we were seated upon mats on the floor, ata table about six inches high, and served with sea-weed flakes, rice cakes, pickled pig lip, antique pre-served fish and other delicacies ( ?). Then the geishagirls (Japanese dancers) were introduced to us, eachbowing to the floor and repeating our names. Theydanced and sang, playing with ivory picks on Japan-ese stringed instruments. It was all so weird andoriental that I felt in a sort of dream. We reached home shortly after eleven. I was alittle uneasy concerning the effects
