Summary[edit]
DescriptionSecond World War defence works, Bawdsey - geograph.org.uk - 1136450.jpg |
English: Second World War defence works, Bawdsey For an area of coastline with nothing worth capturing and backed by marshes, this piece of Suffolk is heavily defended. There are regular Martello towers (one just behind the camera), a major 2WW gun emplacement backed by this tower, plus pioneering radar, and the slightly more recent Bloodhound missile sites.
This concrete and steel tower was presumably a lookout and gun directing facility. A few years ago it was offered for sale to convert to a home - considering the crumbling state and small floor area it was no surprise there was no purchaser. The lagoons behind are a fairly recent man-made addition. It does not look like it here, but the unusual round pill-box is separated from the tower by the road to the coastal guns. |
