Summary[edit]

Description

The Saturn V was the most powerful rocket ever built; its purpose was to send humans to the moon.

After six successful lunar landings (and one near-disaster, Apollo XIII), it was deemed that further moon missions were not cost-effective in terms of gathering scientific knowledge or bragging rights. Further Apollo missions were canceled after Apollo XVII, even though there still were three extra Saturn V rockets that would have allowed three extra manned moon landings.

One of the rockets was used to launch the Skylab, America's only space station, into space. A smaller Saturn launched one final Apollo into space for the Apollo-Soyuz rendezvous. That still left two fully intact Saturn V rockets. This is one of them, and the other one is at Johnson Space Center near Houston, Texas. All subsequent US manned space flights took place with the Space Shuttle.
