Summary[edit]
DescriptionSamson Fighting the Lion (18th c., Kargopol style).jpg | Samson Fighting the Lion. Within a medallion Samson is represented against an olive green background, wrestling the lion and tearing open the mouth with his bare hands. The scene is surrounded with decorative floral ornamentation, executed in bright colours. Samson and the Lion is a very rare subject in Russian icon painting. This early example comes from the row with old testament scenes, situated below the local row of an iconostasis. The style of the painting points towards an origin from the Kargopol region. | ||
