Description
English: Royal arms of King Henry VIII, with supporters a dragon gules and a greyhound collared or, with royal crest of England on a cap of maintenance atop a royal helm. (British Library, Royal 20 E VI f. 9v). Detail from Chroniques de France ou de Saint Denis (from 1422 to 1460), made by by Hugues de Lembourg (scribe) in 1487, in northern France, possibly Calais. Provenance: Commissioned in 1487 by Thomas Thwaytes (d.1503), Chancellor of the Exchequer, Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster under Edward IV, and treasurer of Calais until 1490, made by Hugues de Lembourg, his servant, as a gift for King Henry VII: colophon (vol. 3, Royal 20 E III, f. 94v):
'Cy finissent les fais et gestes du roy Loys le gros. Ensemble les fais et gestes de tous les autres dessus nommez ses predeccesseurs, ce qui bien doit souffire pour le contenu du premiers volume present des nobles croniques de france, escriptes en la fourme et maniere que dessus par le commandement de noble ho[m]me messire Thomas Thwaytes chevallier engloys co[n]seiller de Treshault tres puissant et tres excellent prince Henry le VIIe par la grace de dieu roy d' angleterre et tresorier de ses ville et marches de Calays. Et fut ce present et premier volume desdictes cronicques par acheve et fine de la mai[n] de Hugues de Lembourg natif de Paris poure clerc et humble servite[u]r domestique du dessus nomme tresorier.
