Description
Изображен кабинет Николая Петровича Милюкова в его имении Островки Вышневолоцкого уезда Тверской губернии. Кабинет обставлен в соответствии со вкусом своего владельца — достаточно образованного и любящего комфорт человека. Длинные, обитые штофом диваны — работа крепостных мастеров — создают атмосферу уюта. Интерьер украшен предметами, модными в годы позднего романтизма, — католическим распятием, статуэткой Наполеона, человеческим черепом и «готическим» чернильным прибором. На конторских счетах отложено число —1844 — год исполнения картины. Сидящий на диване, погруженный в чтение мальчик, — девятилетний сын помещика Конон Милюков. Ему принадлежал альбом с портретными зарисовками милюковских крестьян, выполненными Сорокой в 1842 году. На стене кабинета висит картина Сороки «Флигель в Островках», ныне находящаяся в Русском музее.
