Title
Roman headstud brooch, close up of decoration
Description
English: Roman cast copper alloy enamelled headstud brooch, Hull Type 148A (Bayley & Butcher 2004), 1st-2nd century AD. The hinged pin is missing; it was held on a copper alloy axis bar within a cylindrical casing on the reverse of the wings; the axis bar projects upwards from the end of one wing and probably originally formed a loop at the top of the head (see Bayley & Butcher 2004, p.96, no.228). Short wings decorated with a groove at each far end and two at the inner ends, flanking a blue enamelled lozenge outlined by four triangular dark blue/black (or perhpas degraded) enamel cells. The head is triangular as seen from above. Semi-circular crest at the top of the head (unpierced); raised head stud immediately below this containing a circle of blue enamel (like the lozenges) with a ring of dark blue/black or degraded enamel around (but including some red at the edge). The subcircular sectioned bow is decorated with a low and narrow raised plate down either side from just below the stud; the bow tapers to the moulded flat oval foot knob which is decorated with a central circle of blue enamel (like that in the headstud). The catchplate is damaged; it extends nearly to the the head (28mm). Bow bent to right (with wings at top). Dark green patina. Length 46.2mm, width across wings 22.3mm, thickness of bow including headstud 7.5mm, thickness as curved 20mm, weight 16.45g.
