Title
Roman coin hoard
Description
English: A fused lump of Late Roman base metal coins. Please see the extract from the Treasure report (below) for further details.

Report for H.M. Coroner

This report will consider these coins with respect to the criteria laid down in the Treasure act (1996): Namely, their age, precious metal content and whether the coins can be said to come from the same find.

Description of the coins

The hoard is a fused in a lump which has been squashed as if extruded through a narrow gap. Perhaps the result of concealment in a building which has subsequently burnt down. None of the uncertain number of coins can be identified but they are of the size of debased radiates or Constantinian nummi. Weight = 80.05g and max length = 75mm.

Discussion

On the balance of probabilities, this find is likely to consist of ten or more base metal coins of an antiquity greater than 300 years, and thus qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
