Title
Roman Hoard
Description
English:

Two fourth-early fifth century ad gold solidii. The coins were issued by Honorius (AD 393-423), the last legitimate emperor to hold sway over Roman Britain. One coin is from the mint of Milan, the other from Ravenna (the latter exhibiting typical plough damage sometimes seen on coins that have undergone archaeological burial)

They are of the same period and from the same findspot as a previous discovery of six gold solidi bringing the total to eight pieces:

Summary:

Period

AD 388-95

Theodosius I 1

Valentinian II 1

AD 395-402

Arcadius 1

Honorius 3

AD 402-6

Honorius 2

total 8

Metal content?

At this period great efforts were made by the Romans to refine gold and silver for their coinage (they carried mint-markings guaranteeing the processes) and such coins were usually as pure as was then technologically possible (i.e. greater than 95%).

Conclusion

On the balance of probabilities, therefore, it can be concluded that these coins belong together as a hoard and constitute a prima facie case of treasure by being precious metal coins of an antiquity greater than 300 years and are of one find of two or more pieces. They are most probably part of the previous Woodbridge find which now totals eight gold coins of the 4th - 5th century AD.
