Title
Roman Coin Hoard. Treasure case no. 2012 T288
Description
English: 27 Roman copper-alloy coins found together. Treasure case no. 2012 T288.

GODSHILL, ISLE OF WIGHT

Richard Abdy

5 bronze radiates and 22 nummi to AD 395 BM ref.: 2012 T288;
PAS ref.: IOW-6D7046

Circumstance of Discovery
This small Theodosian bronze hoard was found with the aid of a metal detector, 11.4.2012 (finder's name withheld).

Amongst the latest coins is a SALVS REIPVBLICAE type. It appears to be an example of the earlier issue of Aquileia although the exergue mintmark is not really legible. The possibility remains of it being an issue of Rome from the next period; and thus the sole example in the hoard of a coin of AD 395-402. (Note: RIC X considers the possibility of the Aquileia type continuing for a very short while beyond AD 395) The hoard certainly runs up to AD 393-5 since it contains one coin of Honorius (mint of Lyon) prior to the death of Theodosius I.
