Riviera Maya area between Playa del Carmen and Cancun.

Riviera Maya resorts stand perversely forlorn, grotesquely out of scale. A big clue perhaps, America’s answer to “what the hell is wrong with us,” a stark contrast to happier traditional cenotes of western Yucatan, tiny village oases of sanity

So obvious to objective travelers… A lot of people kind of sense the solution, but collective economic status quo is often hard to reverse. Similar redevelopments in Cozumel’s Zona Hotelera too, far removed from actual downtown life. Depressing to see old things demolished in a hurry only to end up big isolated sterile tourist traps
