Title
Richard Chaffey Baker, lawyer, pastoralist, politician and federationist
Description

Richard Chaffey Baker (1841-1911) was the first South Australian born member of the colony's legislature (1868) and then of the Legislative Council (1877). He was a delegate to the Federal Conventions of 1891 and 1897-98. Elected to the new Commonwealth parliament in 1901, he was the first president of the Senate until illhealth forced him to leave politics in 1906. A strong conservative, he was 'widely respected for his fairness, decision and ability.' (John Playford, 'Baker, Sir Richard Chaffey (1841–1911)', Australian Dictionary of Biography, National Centre of Biography, Australian National University, http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/baker-sir-richard-chaffey-5107/text8511, published first in hardcopy 1979, accessed online 13 February 2019.)

The portrait appears to be from a collection relating to ministers (or attorneys-general) in South Australian governments. Baker was Attorney-General in the John Hart ministry of 1870-71.
