Summary[edit]
DescriptionReading Corporation Tramways, 22 July 1903.jpg |
English: Reading Corporation Tramways. Electric tram No. 6 has just crossed the junction, heading westwards along Oxford Road. The destination blind reads "Erleigh Road", which is not in this direction, and the trolley-pole appears to have come off the wire. Photograph taken on 22 July 1903, the first day of operation for the electric cars, and the upper deck is occupied by gentlemen in top hats and ladies in large flowery hats - presumably the civic dignitaries. Crowds throng the streets. The Vine Hotel, at No. 74 Broad Street, is to the left, and the grocer's shop of Baylis and Company, 75 and 76 Broad Street, is to the right. In front of Baylis's is a hoarding with advertisements for excursions on the Great Western Railway. 1900-1909 : photograph by Walton Adams, from a cracked glass plate. |
