Summary[edit]

Description

SHEPHERD CENTER SHARE MILITARY INITIATIVE, Atlanta, May 19, 2014 – Maj. Gen. Jim Butterworth, Georgia's Adjutant General, meets with Shepard Center residents before the kick-off of the 2014 "Shepard's Men Run".

Six friends, (a civilian and five U.S. Marines calling themselves the Shepherd’s Men), are running a six-day foot race to the Iwo Jima Memorial in Washington, D.C. to raise awareness for post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury.

Monday morning, starting at the Atlanta nonprofit Shepherd Center, Travis Ellis, a Marietta, Georgia businessman, who by self-admission hates running, teamed with the 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, 4th Marine Division’s reserve unit to bring attention to the unseen plague so many service men and women continue to suffer from as they return from conflicts current and past.

The 700-mile trek will hopefully raise $100,000 to support the Shepherd SHARE Military Initiative that treats some 40 veterans annually at no cost. The runners aim to reach the Marine Memorial May 25th.

"There will be generations who will do great things because of what you (Veterans and caregivers) have done,” Ellis said in his sendoff speech. “You inspire us; ‘Send me!’”
