très beau temps. Le cap était mis sur le S. 45° O., avec unevitesse de 8 nœuds, de manière à atteindre le lendemain matinlaccore du banc qui sétend au large des côtes de France, où nouscomptions trouver une profondeur suffisante pour commencerimmédiatement nos dragages profonds. Le 20 au matin nous nous trouvons par 46°34lat. Net 6°52lat. O.La sonde accuse une profondeur de 570 mètres. Le chalutest alors paré et il est mouillé à 7 heures et 1/2. On le laissedraguer une heure et demie, puis on le remonte à bord. Pendantle dragage, la profondeur a sensiblement augmenté : nous perce-vons très nettement le moment où lengin quitte le fond, car, à cetinstant, le bâtiment sabat sur tribord ; comme il reste encoreenviron 700 mètres de câble à virer, nous en concluons que laprofondeur est tombée à ce chiffre et que le chalut a dû balayerune région très en pente, hypothèse que les sondages suivantsvinrent dailleurs confirmer.
