Description

Pvt. Joseph R. Horton (CP 906), National Museum of Health and Medicine

Description: Private Joseph R. Horton, Company D, 17th Pennsylvania cavalry, shows the stump of his amputated right leg. Horton was wounded by a gunshot at the battle of Petersburg, Virginia on March 31, 1865, and his leg was amputated a few days later. Caption reads: “Amputation of leg at upper third.”

History is on reverse: "Joseph R. Horton. Hospital Number 20,441. Joseph R. Horton, Private, Co. D, 17th Pa. Cav, aged 41, was admitted to Harewood U.S.A. Gen’l Hospital, April 5th, 1865, suffering from gun shot wound of right leg, extent of the injury unknown. Wounded, March 31st, 1865, at the battle of Petersburgh, Va. Amputation of right leg, upper third, antero-posterior flap, on field, April 2nd, 1865. On admission, the constitutional state of patient was good. Result favorable. Doing well. Harewood U.S.A. General Hospital, R.B. Bontecou, Surgeon U.S. Vols., In charge.’”
