This line willcross the temporal muscles obliquely, and they and their fascia shouldbe divided with a knife instead of the saw, in order that their edgesmay be accurately approximated for suturing when the skullcap isreplaced. Sawing the skull is no easy task; it may be greatly facilitated bythe employment of an electric or dental engine. For this part of theoperation it is a decided advantage to be ambidextrous. While thesawing is being done with one hand, the head must be steadied withthe other, placed either on the vertex or on the face and protectedby a towel, for the saw is liable to slip, especially when first applied.The scalp, especially of a female, should be protected from sawdustby wrapping towels about it. Proffered assistance should be declined,because, while it is natural to look out for ones own fingers, it isimpossible effectively to guard anothers.
