Description
English: Portrait of Muḥammad ʿAlí Beg; single-page painting mounted on a detached album folio. The envoy from Persia, perhaps ambassador of Shah Safi to Shah Jahan in 1041 H (1631 AD), wears pink tunic and stands in profile against light blue ground. Framed by a brown border with gold vegetal motifs along top and bottom of image, followed by border of gold vegetal motifs on orange ground; margin decorated with motif of alternating pink and red flowering plants outlined in gold on neutral ground; entire folio bordered by a thin, green adhesive strip. Folio belongs to a series of single-page paintings and drawings of Indian rulers, all of which were once attached to the leaves of the album 1920,0917,0.13, also housed in the British Museum collection. Ink, opaque watercolour and gold on paper.
