It appears to have been sometimes thepractice during the first excavations atPompeii, to throw into that rehnquished, the materials drawn from the next ex-plored, after the paintings, mosaic pave-ments, and other articles considered valu-able had been removed; but a contrarysystem was subsequently adopted, and isnow acted upon. Although their better preservation wasthe end consulted in thus transferring thesemonuments to form a part of a distantcollection ; still it is much to be regretted, that means could not have been devisedfor their preservation on the precise spotat which they were originally found, andwhere locality would have thrown aroundthem an interest which they entirely losewhen crowded with other curiosities intothe Museum of Portici.
