urated matter. The mould of thebosom of one is yet shown in the Museumof Portici\ In that part of the lower story removedfrom the covered portico, the rooms moresimply finished contained spades, and otherimplements of husbandry: to this divisionof the house was a separate entrance. This has been called the villa of Cicero:M. Millin names it of Arrius Diomedes. The former, we know, had a house nearPompeii-; the latter was one of its ma-gistrates ; but there appears no real found-ation for deciding this to have been thedwelling of either the one or the other^. 1 It was Sir William Hamiltons opinion that this sub-stance was deposited in a fluent state. The body in questionwas found many feet above the ancient level. She had pro-bably struggled for some time against the continued showersof ashes, until sinking exhausted, she was covered with aslighter stratum, through which subsequent rains might havepenetrated, ^ Letters to Atticus. 3 The plan is^howu in Plate II. POMPEIANA. QQ PLATE II. STREET OF THE TOMBS. The Triclinium. This does not appear to havebeen the property of an individual; at least noinscription remains to point out by whom it wasprepared. The enclosed space was open to thesky; and the walls, covered with stucco, werepainted in compartments^. A pediment raisedon that next the street is one of the frequentinstances of bad taste to be observed at Pompeii:under it was the entrance, little more than fourfeet high. Opposite, around three sides of apedestal formed to sustain the table, was a raisedseat, or bank, about 1 foot 9 inches in height, upon the inclined surface of which, lecti ormattresses, were spread for the party to recline. This triclinium seems capable of affording spacefor nine persons, who were so placed that thefeet were kept on that part farthest removedftom the front; the head of every succeedingindividual being near the bosom of his neigh-bour. The table, which was removeable at Plate I\. II 2 100 POMPEIANA. pleasure,
