35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Cetacea; Family: Delphinidae; Genus: Delphinus; Genus species: Delphinus delphis. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 2.1-2.6 m; Weight: 75 kg; Identification: The back of the common dolphin is black or brown, and the chest and belly are cream to white in color. This dolphin also has a unique hourglass pattern that is tan and pales to gray on its flanks. It has black stripes from the flipper to the lower jaw and from the eye to the base of its beak; Habitat: Temperate and tropical oceans; Diet: Carnivore: fish, squid; Reproduction: Dolphins are born in the summer after a gestation period of 10-11 months; Social Structure: Twenty to over a hundred dolphins will gather in pods, forming a hierarchy. These pods may join others to form large schools; Behavior: Highly intelligent and social, dolphins love to play and are very active; Status: No special status; Interesting Facts: There have been reports of dolphins helping others that have been injured.
