Summary[edit]

Description The sequence shows the scattering of the light created by a ship's exhaust plume. I sent the sequence to mirage specialist Andy Young. Here's his comments:"These are a very pretty example! The thermal turbulence in the ship's exhaust plume is scattering light from the Sun into the beam, with a deflection of several minutes of arc." Andy Young explains the last 6 frames: "here you have the Sun closer to the plume, so the scattering covers a larger area of sky (because the scattering angle is less -- the scattering is weaker -- at the edges of the plume). So in this image, you see the full width of the plume illuminated; in the one taken after it, only the core of the plume, where the scattering is strongest, is illuminated."
