Description
English: A plate engraved for the Macklin Bible after a specially-commissioned painting by Philippe Jacques De Loutherbourg. Photographed from the Bowyer Bible, Bolton, England. Bowyer Bible 31.3994. The Taking of Jesus. Matthew 26:55. Christ standing in the garden of Gethsemane at night, soldiers and disciples lying around him. 1800. Inscriptions: Lettered below image with title, bible reference, production detail: "P. J. De Loutherbourg Pinxt.", "J. Fittler Sculpt." and publication line: "London, Published by Thos. Macklin, Poets Gallery, Fleet Street. April 17th. 1800". Print made by James Fittler. Dimensions: Height: 482 millimetres; width: 397 millimetres. The original painting is now in the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery: 48½ X 37½ .
