English: An old, grotesque reconstruction of Pithecanthropus, called "„Pithecanthropus europaeus (alalus)", preparatory study by Gabriel von Max. The resulting oil painting [1] was a birthday present (1894) for Ernst Haeckel, who was an opponent of Rudolf Virchow
