Text Appearing Before Image:
disease isoften mistaken for acute eczema, although it bears a much strongerresemblance to pemphigus. As the disease usually occurs inneurasthenic subjects, therapeutic measures which tend to improvethe general health of the patient are of prime importance. The third illustration shows a few of the small tumors ofmolluscum. While these may occur upon various portions of thebody, they are frequently found clustered about the eyes or mouth.I remember one striking case, seen years ago, in which a largenumber of whitish flattened and umbilicated mollusca on the face, presented at first glance a strong resemblance to the lesions in thepustular stage of variola. in the fourth illustration is seen a small cutaneous hornspringing from the margin of the ear. In elderly subjects a wartyor corneous patch is not uncommon in this locality. In this patienta conical striated horny growth had started from such a patch. After its removal by the curette a sharply defined and deep woundwas left. PLATE X.

Atrophy of the skin may occur as a primary or secondaryaffection, result from various causes and present various clinicalforms. Primary or idiopathic atrophy is most frequently seen ina macular or striate form. In the macular form round or ovalspots of varying size are noted most frequently upon the neck andarms. They are whitish and wrinkled and may be either depressedor elevated. In the latter case they appear like cutaneous tumors, but pressure of the linger usually shows that there is a pit or holecovered by an abnc^rmally thin skin. In the striate form, which is more common, numerous whitishand wrinkled streaks, wider in the center than at the ends, may beseen upon the abdomen, hips, thighs and the female breasts. Likethe macules these stri^i? may be of a purplish-red hue and hyper-trophic in an early stage of development. Soon, how
