Summary[edit]

Description

Tourmaline schist from the Precambrian of South Dakota, USA. (public display, South Dakota School of Mines Museum of Geology, Rapid City, South Dakota, USA)

Brown = phlogopite mica Pale green = actinolite

Schist is a foliated, intermediate- to high-grade metamorphic rock. Most examples are dominated by mica. This example has phlogopite mica and actinolite amphibole. The rock comes from Precambrian basement rocks in South Dakota's Black Hills, a large dome that was uplifted during the Laramide Orogeny (late Mesozoic to early Cenozoic). The Black Hills are the easternmost Laramide uplift in America's Cordillera. The original Phanerozoic sedimentary cover has been eroded away and is now only exposed in the margins of the Black Hills Uplift. The core of the Black Hills is a complex mix of mostly metamorphic and igneous rocks. The area includes several famous gold mines.
