Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Laurentide Inn, 158 Main Street, Penn Yan, New York, March 2022. A commanding example of the High Greek Revival style that was the rage for upper-class residences at the time it was built, this early-1820s mansion distinguishes itself architecturally with its majestic two-story tetrastyle Ionic temple front, which stands in front of a simple façade three bays in width where the characteristic large windows are framed with wooden shutters and topped with simple stone lintels. The portico covering the side entrance is scarcely less exquisite, with a pair of slender Doric columns flanking a balustrade and undergirding an entablature that's topped in turn by a broken pediment. Its original owner was William Morrison Oliver (1792-1863), whose lofty stature in the local political scene (his two stints as Judge of the Court of Common Pleas were followed up by terms in the New York State Senate, as Lieutenant Governor, and as a U.S. Congressman) gave way late in his life to a second career in finance, serving as president of the Yates County Bank until its failure in the Panic of 1857. Oliver lived in the house until his death. In more recent years, the building has served as a bed & breakfast, most recently the Laurentide Inn, in operation since 2019.
