On this theoryHuntoon and myself inoculated a monkey subcutaneously lastAugust with the mesenteric glands of a case but with negativeresult. Since then Flexner and Lewis have succeeded by in-troducing the gland intracerebrally. Krause and Meinickeworking on the same hypothesis fed a monkey with the intestinalcontents of a fatal case of poliomyelitis with negative results.Leiner and Wiesner then fed a monkey with the virus, by in-troducing it into the stomach with a catheter, thus avoidingthe possibility of nasa-pharyngeal inoculation, and prevented itsrapid excretion by the administration of opium. Their monkeybecame paralyzed and thus they proved the possibility of theintestinal route of infection. Flexner and Lewis have success-fully inoculated a monkey by introducing the virus into the naso-pharynx after they had previously scarified the mucus mem-brane.
