English: A silver medal of the American Fur Company to Plains Indians trading at Fort Union, North Dakota. Obverse: Profile of John Jacob Astor and the text PRESIDENT OF THE AMERICAN FUR COMPANY. Reverse: The text PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP and a crossed tomahawk and calumet above and below, inspired by the official ”Peace and Friendship” medals given to Indian delegates by the presidents of the United States. Diameter: 66 mm. Struck 1832 or 1833. |
